One of Donald Trump‘s worst moments as president, and it is in some truly horrid company, is his treatment of immigrants.
Specifically, the policy of family separation, in which families fleeing dangers in their own countries tried to get in here and had their children taken from them.
As a deterrent to other families from doing the same.

The policy has since been tweaked after public outcry, but the damage was done for thousands of families. Now the administration is still struggling as they’re being forced to put hundreds of families back together — since they had no plan of ever doing so.
On Thursday, Ivanka Trump finally broke her public silence about the children taken from their parents as an Axios event, saying:
“That was a low point for me as well. I felt very strongly about that and I am very vehemently against family separation and the separation of parents and children so I would agree with that sentiment. Immigration is incredibly complex as a topic. Illegal immigration is incredibly complicated.”
OH HELL NO.
We’re calling bullshit on that right now.
First, “was a low point”? “Felt very strongly”? What’s with the past tense?
There are still hundreds of families that are separated, hundreds of children ripped from their parents’ arms.
Hundreds of families her own family’s administration is having a really hard time reuniting now that they’re being forced to — because they never intended on doing so.
Second, “vehemently against” it? THEN WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THEY ENACTED IT, Ms. White House Adviser?? Where was your voice when it was happening?
Oh, right, tweeting about how great it was to hold your son.
SHE DID NOTHING. For all her pomp and pretension, Ivanka does not check her father’s worst impulses — she just tries to make him look less like a monster while acting on them.
Supposedly Ivanka spoke to her father behind closed doors after the images of those crying children came out, shortly before he signed the order to undo the hideous act. But where was she before that?
Those images are when most of America woke up to the injustice the government was carrying out, but Ivanka knew about it beforehand.

The Department of Health and Human Services told Trump how bad this would be for children. Why didn’t Ivanka?
Because she doesn’t really care. This wasn’t an impassioned plea from a mother — it was PR cleanup. And she’s still doing it now with this statement.
Remember — Ivanka isn’t the Trump who’s different. She isn’t the angel on Don’s shoulder.
Ivanka is an accomplice.
Here’s the rest of her statement:
“I am the daughter of an immigrant, my mother grew up in communist Czech Republic, but we are a country of laws. She came to this country legally and we have to be very careful about incentivizing behavior that puts children at risk of being trafficked, at risk of entering this country with coyotes or making an incredibly dangerous journey alone. These are not easy issues, these are incredibly difficult issues and like the rest of the country, I experienced them actually in a very emotional way.”
See? There’s the defense of the policy after telling you how wrong she thought it was.
