Kelly Clarkson Is Determined To Have Her Kids Grow Up In A 'Stable' Environment Amid Divorce

kelly clarkson wants to give her kids a positive upbringing

Kelly Clarkson is determined to give her kids a stress-free upbringing!

The songstress, who filed for divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock earlier this month, is asking for their prenup agreement to be upheld, plus joint custody of their children, 6-year-old daughter River Rose and 4-year-old son Remington Alexander. And as someone with firsthand experience of what it’s like being a child of divorced parents, Kelly wants to shield her little ones as much as possible.

A source close to the American Idol winner shared with People:

“She had to work through a lot of hurt from her childhood. Her priority is making sure her children grow up in a stable, loving environment.”

Totally understandable! Even without her own past trauma, we can imagine she’d want that for them. Clarkson is also hoping to maintain her relationship with 18-year-old Savannah Blackstock and 13-year-old Seth Blackstock, Brandon’s children from a previous marriage:

“She’s always thought of Seth and Savannah as her own too, and she has a special relationship with both of them. Kelly wants to remain close with her step-kids.”

That’s great to hear!!

Recently, The Voice coach got candid with Glamour UK about the issues she still grapples with from her own childhood.

“I have people in my life that suffer from addiction to certain things and that doesn’t go away. It’s always there. It’s just navigating your life around that existence in your life. You don’t ever one day wake up and are like, ‘Okay, I’m totally cool with the fact that I have major abandonment issues because horrible things happened.’ That’s why I write songs about it and you connect with all these people that you don’t know. Or even an artist, as on my team right now on The Voice, we have a very similar background and it’s nice to be able to look at her and go, ‘Look, you don’t ever get over that.’ It’s always going to present itself. You get married and you’re like, ‘Oh, I have no one for the dance or to walk me down the aisle. You know what? I’m not going to get married, just going to elope.'”

Wow. Being open about emotional wounds this deep isn’t easy, but Clarkson has bravely been vulnerable through song in the past. Via the emotional track Piece by Piece, Kelly sang about her father’s abandonment and the comfort she found in her now-estranged husband.

She continued:

“There are always things that happen that come up that bum you out, but at the same time you’ve got to recognise at some point though, that it’s made you who you are. You are thankful and I’m a very strong individual. I’m very confident and I’ve been forced to find that in myself. I’ve been forced to at a very early age. At some point, I say thank you to my father, who passed away last year. But I thank him as I wouldn’t have been able to be all that I am right now without all of that. So, you just take your cards you’re dealt, and you do the best you can with them.”

We hope Kelly and Brandon can sort things out amicably for the sake of their kids!
