Ethan Peck
OK, this isn’t a love interest exactly. But actor Ethan Peck was Mary-Kate’s first kiss, and that totally deserves a mention. Ethan played Michel, her French partner-in-crime in 1999’s Passport to Paris, a role he got by being hand-chosen by the star from a stack of audition tapes.
According to director Alan Metter their onscreen kiss (spoilers!) was Mary-Kate’s “first kiss of any kind” — and she was so nervous she “did a dozen takes.”
Innerestingly you might actually know Ethan from somewhere completely different these days — he’s the new Spock on Star Trek: Discovery!
Max Winkler
Mary-Kate’s first known Hollywood relationship was with Max Winkler, the son of TV legend Henry Winkler, in 2002. Both were teens at the time. He told New York Magazine years later:
“I dated an Olsen twin because I was in love with an Olsen twin. But I wasn’t in love with her because she was ‘an Olsen twin.’ I just thought she was so pretty and smart and cute.”
Max went on to become an indie film director, known for the films Ceremony and Flower.
David Katzenberg
Mary-Kate’s next boyfriend, David Katzenberg, was also a child of Hollywood royalty; his father is Dreamworks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg.
That relationship was reportedly pretty serious, lasting nearly a whole year before Mary-Kate left Los Angeles to study at NYU in 2004, putting an end to things.
Katzenberg has become a successful TV director and film producer, notably having produced 2017’s smash hit It: Chapter One.
Ali Fatourechi
Mary-Kate reportedly dated this fashion designer for a few months in 2004 — at the same time her sister Ashley was dating his business partner! It was like one of their movies come to life…

Stavros Niarchos III
For about 5 months in 2005, Mary-Kate fell hard for shipping heir Stavros Niarchos III — until he left her for Paris Hilton.
The breakup was apparently so devastating the Full House star took a leave of absence from school! In a rare moment of candor about her relationship status, she told W magazine following their split:
“I miss him and I love him and I don’t speak with him anymore. It’s a hurtful and painful subject. I’ve pretty much been with someone my whole life, so this is a hard time for me.”
Max Snow
Mary-Kate moved back to Los Angeles after that. According to reports she had a relationship for nearly a year with photographer (and descendant of the de Menil oil and textiles family) Max Snow.
Years later he ended up marrying Danielle Steel‘s daughter Vanessa Traina.
Heath Ledger
This is a rough one…
In late 2007 Mary-Kate was linked to celebrated actor Heath Ledger — and was apparently dating him at the time of his tragic death from an accidental drug overdose in January 2008. A source told People:
“[They were] casually dating for three months before Heath’s death. They were hooking up, but neither were particularly interested in making it exclusive.”
According to reports from the time, Mary-Kate was the first person to get the phone call after his masseuse found him unconscious; the New York Minute star, in turn, was the one who called the paramedics.
A very sad chapter in the story of her love life.
Lapo Elkann
A month after Ledger’s passing, Mary-Kate was spotted with Fiat heir Lapo Elkann at the 2008 Paris Fashion Week. The two were rumored to have spent a few weeks together.
Nate Lowman
Mary-Kate’s next big relationship was with artist Nate Lowman. After being introduced by mutual friends in October 2008, the couple dated for nearly a year and a half.
Dustin Yellin

Mary-Kate was rumored to be dating artist Dustin Yellin briefly in 2011.
Innerestingly he dated Michelle Williams a couple of years later — becoming the second love interest they had in common.
Olivier Sarkozy
Mary-Kate began dating French banker Olivier Sarkozy in 2012. After a couple of years, they got engaged and in November 2015 they were married in a private ceremony in NYC. Sarkozy is over 16 years older and already had kids — turning the How The West Was Fun star into a step-mom to two children.
The relationship soured in 2020 and Mary-Kate filed for an emergency divorce, the only kind which was allowed during the coronavirus pandemic.
