Meghan Markle Admits Being A New Mom & A New Royal Has 'Been A Struggle': 'Not Many People Have Asked If I'm Okay'

Meghan Markle mental health baby bump

Meghan Markle isn’t shying away from what’s really going on!

The Duchess of Sussex is the focal point of an upcoming ITV documentary about her and Prince Harry‘s charitable work and trips to Africa, which will debut in the U.K. this Sunday. The doc promises to give “a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse” into the royal couple’s recent tour of the southern part of that continent, and shine a light on all the good work they’ve done there.

But the doc does more than that, too, also choosing to focus what appears to be quite a bit of attention on the Duchess herself. It makes sense — after all, this was filmed in the summer months just after Meghan gave birth to the couple’s sonMaster Archie, in early May. And with a whirlwind year of marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, and more, all wrapped up with the extended trip to Africa, clearly Harry’s better half must be feeling the pressures of royal life!

At one point, journalist Tom Bradby — who hosts the special, and interviews a variety of people close to the Duke and Duchess for it — asked the new mom about all of that, and how she was coping with the changes… and she clearly became very emotional, very quickly.

The 38-year-old said (below):

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um … yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

Wow! That’s a remarkably open and honest answer considering the royals’ relative distaste for the media right now, and it’s clear Meghan isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.

When Bradby then pressed her on the issue, asking if “it would be fair to say” that she’s “not really okay, as in, it’s really been a struggle,” Meghan paused for a moment before finally, simply saying “Yes.”

The moment was particularly powerful on camera, which you can see at the very end of this promo clip for the whole special (below):

That emotion! So much going on there… we just wanna give her a hug!

What do U think about the scene, Perezcious readers?! Meghan has thus far done a remarkable job of not showing her private self much in public, and staying very professional and composed… but this is real and honest!

Tough stuff, but also very brave for her to come out and begin to broach the subject. Good for her!
