Olivia Culpo fell on some hard times after her breakup with Nick Jonas.
As you may recall, the pair dated for two years before splitting in 2015. If they seemed inseparable from the outside, that’s nothing compared to what the relationship was like in private — the model thought she had found the love of her life with the JoBro! But looking back she thinks it was just a case of young love.
In an interview with People on Monday, she opened up about the relationship — which was apparently still difficult to talk about:
“Do I have to talk about that? I did date Nick and that was a very formative experience for me.”
Do I have to talk about that? Oof! Still a touchy subject? She continued nonetheless:
“I moved to L.A. with him. I had no brand, no money, and I was in love. That was great, right, but when he broke up with me, I was kind of left with no sense of identity. My whole identity was in him — which is a very common story of a young person in love.”
It must’ve been so scary to uproot her whole life and follow her heart only to have it all come to an end. But saying she had no brand? She was already Miss Universe, ffs! Surely she could have set up some brand deals and modeling work based on that alone! But maybe she didn’t think she had to?

The 30-year-old believed the couple were endgame — she was ready to settle down and plan her future with him. She had entrusted her future security so much to the relationship that after the split she started to wonder how she would even accomplish simple things — like paying for her apartment and groceries:
“I thought we were going to get married, I thought all the things, and I just remember night after night looking up at my ceiling in my apartment that I couldn’t afford thinking to myself how am I going to pay my rent. I couldn’t even afford my groceries.”
Wow! Sounds like she really didn’t have a backup plan at all! Oof.
Culpo doesn’t see her struggles as all bad, though. She said she learned a lot from it:
“It was a serious, pivotal moment for me, but it was something that taught me that you can’t give up.”
You go, girl!
Since the breakup, Nick has of course moved on to his actual endgame — he’s now married to actress Priyanka Chopra — and earlier this year they surprised the world by welcoming a baby girl. But Olivia is doing great, too. Since 2019, she’s been dating San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. Ch-ch-check out the hot couple (below):

We’re glad Olivia was able to take something positive from the experience. It says a lot about her strength and bravery that she was able to come out on top. We’re so happy that she’s happy — and knows not to lose her sense of self-reliance anymore!
