R. Kelly‘s daughter is opening up about her disgraced father.
In a trailer for TVEI Network’s new documentary R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, Joanne Kelly got candid about coping with the aftermath of learning about the Ignition singer’s crimes. The 26-year-old says in the teaser:
“Nobody wants to be the child of the father that is out here hurting women and children.”
That must be so incredibly difficult… Poor young woman.

Her brother Robert Kelly Jr. also appears in the trailer, adding:
“Everywhere we go, everything we do, it’s always going to have some time of double meaning under it, or someone’s going to read between the lines that aren’t there.”
And because of everything their father did, Joanne says a father/daughter relationship just isn’t possible:
“He knows exactly why we can’t have the relationship that we would have liked to have with him.”
And it’s going to be the same for her son… Because she has no intention of introducing him to his grandfather:
“If my son asks questions, I’m going to be as truthful as possible, but I will not be taking my son to the prison to meet his grandfather.”
That must have been such a tough decision to come to — after all, family is family. But Joanne has always been on the side of R. Kelly’s victims. She can’t ever think of him as a good granddad — not with his misdeeds in mind. Not to mention R. Kelly is anything BUT an example for a young boy to look up to!
The disgraced singer was convicted on child pornography charges in 2022, and was sentenced in 2023 to 20 years in prison. He had already been serving a 30-year sentence at the time from a 2021 conviction on racketeering and sex trafficking. He’s currently spending his sentence at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. And the moment he was convicted changed everything for Joanne. She emotionally breaks down in the trailer, admitting:
“He was my everything. For a long time I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person that he would do something to me … I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life.”
What a tough thing to bear…
Elsewhere in the trailer, Joanne’s mother and R. Kelly’s ex-wife Drea makes an appearance, too. She says:
“Just because you’re not a good husband doesn’t mean you can’t be a good father. And the fact that he didn’t even try. What he did to me, he did to me. But you didn’t have to do it to my damn kids.”
Oof. So many emotions. You can watch the full trailer (below):
