Tyler Baltierra has some BIG regrets when it comes to his biological daughter Carly.
We all know the tragic story by now. Tyler and his wife Catelynn Lowell gave up their first child in what was meant to be an open adoption. Sadly, they’ve had a massive falling out with adoptive parents Brandon and Teresa Davis, who have allegedly blocked them from having any contact with the now 16-year-old.
During the season finale of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter on Thursday, Tyler got super candid about his feelings about the whole situation — and what comes next. He emotionally stated something that viewers have long assumed:
“I regret placing my kid for adoption.”
Oof. That’s so tough. And Catelynn agreed she’s had the same thoughts, too.

The former OnlyFans star explained:
“We didn’t know we were going to get financially stable. We didn’t know that we were going to have resources to work on our mental health and get better before we brought more kids into the world.”
They were so young. How could they have known they’d still be together with three more daughters, Nova, 10, Vaeda, 6, and Rya, 3? They were trying to do what was best for Carly at the time — and they believed they’d always get to be involved. We aren’t too shocked to hear they’ve had regrets.
It’s obviously a really complicated situation, though, and Tyler opened up about that by expressing his gratitude for the Davis family for what they’ve done for Carly:
“We can never say we’re not grateful to them. Both things can be true at the same time. I can be very grateful, and I can also wish you would have been more upfront and honest about what you wanted from this adoption before you took the baby.”
Things are unfortunately still really tense between the two families. In the finale, Brandon and Teresa actually gave the birth parents a chance to hear a recording of the teenager singing a song she’d written about the adoption (with the help of Dr. Drew Pinsky, who was mediating their relationship between the two couples) — but the birth parents denied the chance to hear it because of some unsettling requirements. What seemed at first like a super sweet olive branch didn’t turn out that way at all!
In a joint statement shared to socials on Thursday, Tyler and Catelynn called out the Davises for the “manipulative” move. Apparently, they “refused” to let the reality stars keep a copy of the song — despite that being what their daughter wanted — and were only allowed to listen to it on camera, which created an obviously very confusing conundrum and triggering situation. In a letter written to the adoptive parents, they explained why they wanted a chance to listen to the song in private first, noting:
“For us it’s so beautiful to listen to her but it also brings up a lot of feelings. So we were just asking to listen to it privately first & process the inevitably intense feelings that come from it.”
They continued:
“You get upset that we speak about our adoption story publicly, but simultaneously want us to share a very personal song regarding our adoption story nationally on television for the whole world.”
That is odd…
In an Instagram caption, they alleged:
“We never chose to not listen to the song! We were actually super excited, very touched, & couldn’t wait to hear it! But this was all thrown onto us out of nowhere with MTV’s set up. We never pursued Dr. Drew’s help on our own, this was all MTV’s idea since their producers were the only ones that our biological daughter’s parents were willing to speak with about all of this. Their original plan was to have MTV film them & their family, as long as MTV didn’t have them talk about the adoption while filming. (Which MTV didn’t think made sense, so they compromised behind the scenes with this song idea).”
They went on to open up about the challenges of “navigating an open adoption as a birthparent, especially with such a constant imbalanced power dynamic.” They expressed:
“Birthparents are always at the mercy of the adopters (which is understandable, since we’re the ones who relinquished our baby to them), but that still doesn’t make it any less hard or painful.”
The MTV personalities ended their message by sharing a terrible but necessary decision — they will “not be mentioning” Carly or her parents publicly anymore:
“We’re actually relieved that this episode is airing, so that way we can all just finally move forward.”

Gosh, that’s so hard. It seems like they’re doing this in hopes of one day being able to mend things, but it shows how messy it’s all gotten. Such a shame…
