Whitney Houston's Mother -- Legendary Gospel Singer Cissy Houston -- Dead At 91

Whitney Houston's Mom Cissy Dies At 91

Cissy Houston, mother to music icon Whitney Houston, has died.

On Monday, The Associated Press heard from the gospel singer’s daughter-in-law Pat Houston that she’d passed away. The 91-year-old had spent her last days in her home in New Jersey, under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease. So thankfully she was surrounded by her family when she went.

In a statement to the outlet, Pat said of her mother-in-law:

“Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We loss the matriarch of our family.”

Heartbreaking. The film producer went on to remind everyone Cissy’s own contributions to music and culture are “unparalleled”:

“Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts.”

Cissy’s career spanned over eight decades, with her first step into the spotlight being a gospel group she joined with her siblings back in 1938 called the Drinkard Four. She went on to become one of the most acclaimed gospel singers in history, taking home two Grammys in her career. She also sang with legends such as Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. Truly one of the greats. And that’s not to mention passing her immense talent to Whitney.

What an incredible legacy she leaves behind. R.I.P.
