What were you taught when you were a kid? That there were four tastes, right? Sweet, salty, sour and bitter?
That couldn’t have possibly explained all the complexities of taste, though, so a fifth was added: savory.
BUT IS THAT ENOUGH?? No!
The new theory is that there’s a sixth taste: Fatty!
Here’s the theory:
The theory goes that, if people can pick out fatty acids in foods that aren’t luscious or crispy, and don’t smell like rendering fat, that must mean that the tongue can respond to “fattiness” in the same way, or at least a similar way, to salt or sugar.
And guess what? People could!
Weird, eh?
Man, things were simpler when we were kids! Ha!
