The #FreeBritney movement has put Britney Spears‘ conservatorship back under the spotlight where it definitely needs to be.
The pop idol is 37 years old, unimaginably wealthy, and the mother of two healthy and happy sons.
Yet she’s still under the control of her father, Jamie Spears. And not in a figurative way — she literally has restrictions on her movements enforced by security guards. She’s not even allowed to own an iPhone??

While the controversy may feel fresh once again, this has been going on for a DECADE.
Even back then there were times the singer wanted to break free of the control.
DailyMail.com was given access to a handwritten note, said to have been authored by Britney herself, from around 2009.
The insider who gave the outlet the note explained:
“I think she was frustrated with what was going on and what was being reported and said. She didn’t usually get a chance to speak her mind and be heard.”
That still seems true, unfortunately.
We obviously can’t corroborate the source of the letter, but assuming it’s authentic, this is a fascinating insight into Britney’s mindset all those years ago — and into the conservatorship which was just in its infancy at the time.
The letter, written in the third person, begins in response to Kevin Federline‘s article My Side Of The Story from People magazine in December 2008:
“After reading Kevin’s article in People I was amazed at how a lot of the focus was on Britney their mother to sell a story for People magazine, instead of the focus being on Kevin. What happened to Britney was a year ago and people need to get with the times. And as far as Kevin saying Britney divorced him, she was forced to by her lawyers b/c she went to visit him in N.Y. and he wouldn’t see her and the children and her lawyers said if she doesn’t divorce him he’s going to do it himself. So Kevin trying to play the innocent victim is hardly irevalent [sic]. He left her and the babies. Her going on the mend partying two years ago has nothing to do w/ the situation now. She is a completely different person and most of their fighting was done back then b/c of his problem waking and baking to marujuna [sic] at 5:00 in the morning.”
She writes:
“No one talks about these things b/c no one knows the truth.”
Brit next details her side of the 2008 incident in which her children were taken away while she was locked in a bathroom — which led to her being placed on psychiatric hold:
“Her behavior when her children got taken away b/c of her locking herself in the bathroom is understandable considering her friend at the door kept telling her the cops are leaving don’t worry stay in the bathroom. She was lied to and set up. Her children were taken away and she did spin out of control which any mother would in those circumstances. Her next visit took a toll as well she wasn’t listening to her manager — he lost control so he wanted to scare her.”
Wanted to scare her?? Eesh!
Even then this conservatorship sounds scary:
“Now this year Britney has been silenced to speak about anything that’s really going on. The people controlling her life have made 3 million dollars this year.
She would love for new eyes to see her situation, but if she brings it up she’s constantly threatened that the conservators will take her kids away.”
Have her conservators been using her children as pawns to control her all these years??
“So how long does this go on. As long as the people are getting paid and she has no rights it could go on for a while, but it doesn’t make it right at all.”
Little does poor 2009ish Britney know we’ll still be discussing this in 2019.
She concludes:
“Everyone is very quick to put a gloomy eye on Britney. Does everyone talk about Janet Jackson giving her baby to her brother hopefully she won’t do it with this child. Britney has given her brother a 2 million dollars apt. Her mother a 4M estate in Louisiana and her father the best job in show business. She’s a very giving person and would love to get the respect she deserves.”
We’d love for Brit to get the respect she deserves, too.
Not to mention the freedom…
