You can overcome addiction with a little faith.
That was Eliza Dushku‘s message detailing her own struggle with substance abuse at the New Hampshire Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness.
On Tuesday’s summit, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum revealed she is an alcoholic and addict who has been sober for eight years.

The actress — who spoke at the request of the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, which sponsored the summit — recounted her own battle with addiction to the audience of Boston students.
The 36-year-old remembered:

“It was fun, and I loved it, until it wasn’t. Drugs didn’t love me. They didn’t love my family. They definitely didn’t love my friends that died.”

After speaking on the harrowing experience of going to the funerals of her party friends, the actress revealed that she first decided to get sober for her family, continuing:

“I remember my brother telling me he didn’t want me to be around my niece because he didn’t trust me… I’m a good person, but when I did drugs and I drank, I didn’t make good decisions. I’m sure some of you can relate to that, but all it takes is one bad decision.”

Dushku gave hope to those battling the same addictions, noting she’s “a really good auntie today” and now living lifelong dreams by attending college.

The Bring it On actress ended her speech by encouraging those who are facing similar problems to not lose hope, adding:

“I got sober for my family. But today, I’m sober for me, and I’m sober for you. Because drugs and alcohol are powerful, but we are more powerful.”

Right on!
Overcoming addiction isn’t easy. We applaud the actress for opening up about such a personal struggle and inspiring those who are undergoing their own battles with drugs and alcohol.
