Elizabeth Olsen Auditioned To Play Daenerys Targaryen & It Was 'The Most Awkward Audition' She's Ever Had!

Elizabeth Olsen auditioned for Daenerys

It’s hard to picture anyone other than Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen.
Before HBO gave the role to the British actress, many others auditioned to play the groundbreaking Game of Thrones character. One of those actresses was Elizabeth Olsen — and let’s just say her audition didn’t go so hot.
In fact, the Avengers: Endgame star says her experience trying out for the Mother of Dragons was her worst audition ever!
Speaking with Vulture, the 30-year-old admitted that she was up for the role of Dany before producers settled on Clarke. Olsen had just started working as an actress at the time and was auditioning for “everything” she could get her hands on.

Eventually, she got the chance to try out for the role of the larger-than-life Khaleesi, which apparently ended up being “the most awkward audition” the MCU star has ever had.
Explaining how she was asked to perform a monologue from the first season, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s little sis recalled being a bit overwhelmed by the Napoleon-esque character — especially since it wasn’t clear how Dany spoke.
The actress explained:

“[The monologue was from] after she just burned. And she’s making this speech to thousands of people about how she’s their queen. They didn’t know if they wanted a British accent or not. So, you did it in both. It was terrible. Anytime someone says, ‘Bad audition story.’ That’s one I remember.”

It just wasn’t meant to be!
Of course, things ended up working out for Olsen. She was later cast as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch for the Avengers movies — a role she’s set to reprise in a new TV spinoff, WandaVision, that’s being produced for Disney+.

Interestingly enough, the Breaker of Chains was originally portrayed by Tamzin Merchant in the unaired pilot for Game of Thrones. The pilot was said to be a complete mess, causing show runners Dan Weiss and David Benioff to make some big changes; one being recasting the role of Daenerys.
Clarke, of course, went on to own the role of Dany throughout the show’s eight seasons.

While Olsen never got to put on that infamous blonde Targaryen wig, she remains a devout GoT fan to this day. As for who she wanted to win the Iron Throne in Sunday’s series finale, the actress revealed:

“I’m just so deep in Game of Thrones that all I can think about is Kit Harington. I mean, he’s just brainwashed me.”

Sounds like she would’ve had some great on-screen chemistry with Kit Harington!
Sadly, as we now know, Jon Snow didn’t become the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms like Olsen had hoped. As for Daenerys… let’s just say the Dragon Mother won’t be getting a spin-off.

She is still the most iconic character of the most popular tv show in the whole world, though!
