OMG The Friends Reunion Special Is REAL!!! Look!

Friends Reunion Special HBO

If you were wondering which universe we’re in, don’t worry — it’s The One Where The Friends Reunion Special Is Really Happening! LOLz!

A couple months back we heard the cast of the still incredibly popular sitcom, which is found by more and more fans every year on streaming, were in talks to reunite for a one-off reunion special on HBO Max.

At the time no one was spilling as talks with creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane were in the earliest stages… but now the cat is out of the bag!

The all-star cast — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer — took to their incredibly popular Instagram feeds to all share the exact same message:

“It’s happening…”

Along with this adorable vintage promo photo:

Note they tagged @HBOMax just so everyone was totally clear what was going on!!!

This is more exciting than the time we got trapped in an ATM vestibule with Jill Goodacre!

The new installment couldn’t come at a better time; fans have been deprived of the show for two months since it ended its long run streaming on Netflix at the end of 2019.

But what will the Friends reunion special *be* exactly?? We mean besides an invaluable ratings boost for HBO’s new streaming service.

Will it be an extended episode of the show? Catching up on what everyone’s favorite besties have been up to all this time, like recent hit revivals Fuller House or Girl Meets World or the extra couple seasons of Will & Grace??

Maybe something more meta, like the Seinfeld reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm or the incredibly self-deprecating 90210??

We’re really hoping for the former, but signs point to something less conventional. Back in October, Jen Aniston seemed to imply there wouldn’t be a reunion as such, telling Ellen DeGeneres:

“We would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”

Meanwhile co-creator Marta Kauffman was more explicitly against a classic sequel run, explaining:

“There are several reasons. One, the show is about a time in your life when your friends are your family. It’s not that time anymore. All we’d be doing is putting those six actors back together, but the heart of the show would be gone. Two, I don’t know what good it does us. The show is doing just fine, people love it. (A reunion) could only disappoint.”

Well, a reunion certainly could disappoint. But it could also just be an amazing gift to the world!

Are YOU excited to step back into Central Perk??
