Gerard Butler Talks Brush With Death And Rehab

Rehab is one of those things that seemingly goes hand-in-hand with fame. Doesn’t it seem like famous people are in and out of it constantly?
When a celebrity truly embraces it though, that’s when amazing things happen — and it even takes hold of their craft and produces amazing results. For Gerard Butler, there is nothing he has taken more seriously:

“Maybe a stronger person wouldn’t have needed to go.When you hear the word rehab, you think, ├óΓé¼╦£He’s a mess, he’s f–ked up.’ But I’m glad I did it. I’ve made a s–tload of wrong decisions in my life. But I know I’ve made some right ones as well.”

He didn’t go to rehab for what you think, and it definitely wasn’t alcohol related:

“I haven’t had a drink in 15 years.”

It was because of an injury during his surfing movie Chasing Mavericks:

“I was actually taking a minimal amount [of pills] when I went in. It was more about becoming a mental warrior and not letting pain bother you. The [instructor] would say, ├óΓé¼╦£I don’t want to hear about your f–king MRIs or your f–king X-rays…Let’s learn how to say to the pain, ‘F–k you.'”

The accident was pretty scary — Gerard was submerged by a wave for almost a minute, causing injury and “visceral” flashbacks and his mind ended up in a place where he “didn’t want it to be.”
He continued on the Betty Ford Clinic

“They really do rip you apart. You get rid of a bunch of s–t, realize a bunch more s–t, and you make a plan.”

We’re just glad you’re better, Gerard. We don’t know how we’d handle the barren Hollywood landscape without you!
