This is AH-Mazing!
Yesterday marked a very important and special day for Idris Elba and David Oyelowo as they were on Queen Elizabeth II‘s New Year’s Honors list!
They aren’t “Sirs” yet, but they did receive the honor of becoming being titled Officers of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)!

Elba and Oyelowo were recognized for their services in cinema as the award honors those that play a major role in “any activity, including people whose work has made them known nationally in their chosen area.”
The Luther star responded to the great honor by saying:

“Awards and honors come in all shapes and sizes and all as significant as the other. But this is beyond special as it comes from Queen and country, and I couldn’t be more proud for receiving this right now. What a year. On me head son!”

Idris has had quite a year as he’s recently received three SAG Award nominations as well as two Golden Globes nominations — one for Best Supporting Actor in a motion picture for for Netflix‘s hit movie Beasts of No Nation and one for Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie for Luther.
Oyelowo was also quite honored as he thought back on receiving a grant from the Prince’s Trust at 18-years-old so that he could attend a theater production that his family couldn’t afford. The Selma star said of the moment:

“To be honored by the Queen in this way having been aided by her son’s charity feels like a beautiful full-circle moment.”

For those that don’t know, the title of “officer” in the OBE is just two steps below knight! So they’re well on their way to being Sir Idris and Sir David!
We’re so happy for both the actors and can’t wait to see what they go next. Congrats boys!
