Millie Bobby Brown Defends Using American Accent For Husband Jake Bongiovi’s Famous Family!

Millie Bobby Brown is shutting down critics of her ever-changing accent.

The Stranger Things star appeared on Monday’s episode of the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes, where she drifted between her native British accent and the American accent she’s adopted since launching to stardom as a young child — which Sean took note of:

“Hopefully you don’t think this is something bad, but … I’ve noticed [your accent] goes in and out. It’s really cool.”

Millie, who clearly has thought a lot about it, responded:

“That was actually such a huge thing for a minute … I actually call it ‘The Accent Gate.’ It’s so frustrating because that was everywhere for a second. Everyone was talking about my accent, and they had a real problem about it, and I was like, ‘Guys, I’m married to an American.’”

The Electric State star married American icon Jon Bon Jovi’s son Jake Bongiovi in 2024 — and clearly the family rubs off on her. She noted:

“When I’m around his family, I immediately go into an American accent. But then I was just in England, and the second I hear my mum and dad’s accents, I go right back into it.”

Inneresting! The podcast hosts pointed out she’s spent a lot of time in both England and the US balancing family life and fame while growing up, so that has a lot to do with it. But also just the line of work she’s in overall! The 21-year-old added:

“I’m like, you want me to be an actor and you want me to play these characters, but you expect me not to morph into people? What I hear, I do that. It’s all part of it.”
