Sophie Turner is clarifying her comments about single motherhood.
Over the weekend, the Game of Thrones actress opened up about her new role in the miniseries Joan. She’s playing infamous jewel thief and single mom Joan Hannington — and surprisingly she was able to personally relate to the role. In an interview with The Sunday Times, she explained:
“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it … It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter. It’s also really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them.”
“Such a struggle being a single mother.” Oof.

This, of course, comes after Sophie FINALLY finalized her divorce from ex-husband Joe Jonas, whom she shares daughters Willa, 4 and Delphine, 2, with. So it sounded like this was her first update on how the parenting situation is going now that she’s doing it solo…
But fans weren’t having it! On X (Twitter), users called her out for being “dramatic” saying things were a “struggle” for her given her financial status:
“She’s so dramatic”
“She thinks being a single mom is a struggle with all her money..”
“Single mother???? Girl. You have a whole ass co-parent I cannot be here for these lies even if I do not stand for the slander against you!”
“So do millions of other mothers”
“Girl… stop victimizing yourself so much”
And now, the 28-year-old wants you to know she wasn’t referring to HERSELF as a struggling single mom, but rather the character she’s playing onscreen. On her Instagram Story on Monday, the X-Men: Dark Phoenix star wrote:
“I have been widely misquoted today in publications where I have ‘stated’ that ‘it’s such a struggle being a single mother.’ I’d like to clarify that I was talking about the character of Joan that I play and was not referring to myself, which is obvious from the original interview win the Sunday Times Culture section.”
She continued:
“I am very fortunate personally to have a lot of help around me, which is not the case for a lot of people — I applaud all single mothers doing it alone.”
Good for her for taking the opportunity to be transparent about having so much help with her daughters! Especially when there are so many single mothers that aren’t millionaires and truly are “doing it alone,” like she said!
Thoughts??
