U.S. Women's Soccer Team May Boycott The Summer Olympics If No 'Real Progress Has Been Made' In Gender Pay Equality!

When it comes to fighting for equal pay, the U.S. women’s soccer team isn’t playing around!
Last month, five players from the Women’s National Team filed a wage-discrimination complaint against U.S. Soccer because they are paid less than half as much as players on the men’s team!
On behalf of the entire women’s team, co-captain Becky Sauerbrunn, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, and Megan Rapinoe filed paperwork in hopes of achieving wage equality.

And it looks like the athletes are sticking to their guns. If nothing changes in the federation, the team might use their most powerful bargaining tool in protest of wage discrimination — and not show up to August’s Olympics!
In an interview with ESPNW, Sauerbrunn revealed a boycott would “still be on the table” if no progress was made by July, explaining:

“We are reserving every right to do so and we’re leaving every avenue open. And if nothing has changed, if we don’t feel real progress has been made, then that’s a conversation that we’re going to have.”

As cited in their complaint, the team isn’t asking for much — just to be paid the same wages as the men’s team — who make far more in bonuses, appearance fees, and daily allowances, despite the women’s team generating millions more in revenue.

Sauerbrunn continued:

“The outcome I hope is equal pay for equal play. I think, compensation-wise, respect-wise, that’s what I’m really hoping comes out of this complaint. I hope that it puts enough pressure on the federation to show them our worth, our value.”

We couldn’t agree more!
It’s sad that the women’s team might have to boycott the Olympics to make their point — but it’s great to see these althetes going so far to fight for equality.
