From stripping down to her skivvies for a July 18 dip in the Pacific to melting down at a July 19 photo shoot for OK! Magazine, Britney Spears could hardly be classified as stable.
What could be plaguing the pop tart?
“Her erratic behavior has moved into bipolar disorder,” surmises psychologist Dr. Robert Butterworth, who has not treated Spears, 25.
“Your energy level and emotions alternate between highs and lows, and that seems to have happened here.”
Psychologist Robi Ludwig, who also hasn’t treated her, agrees – to a point.
“It seems that Britney has a mood disorder,” she says, acknowledging that the singer’s behavior is “self-destructive, erratic and dramatic,” which could also be symptomatic of drug and alcohol abuse.
She added: "She strikes me as someone going through a delayed adolescence."

my money is on borderline personality disorder and polysubstance abuse. It looks like Jaden James has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and her behaviour isn't as consistently bizarre (thus far) as in someone who is manic. But she could latch on to the diagnosis of bipolar disorder (when she finally ends up in hospita) to gain public sympathy and avoid responsibility for er actions.

I have bipolar disorder and, in fact, I am a patient of Dr. Ludwig. She is accurate to say that without examination she cannot say with certainty what ails Brit. But I have posted all along that she is bipolar because it takes one to know one. If she does have it, like mine, it is a very mild case and highly treatable. You should not use pejorative language when describing mental illness, its 2007.
I've said this from the beginning and I'm glad it's finally coming out. Because I'm friends with Kevin and his family (and Shar's), I normally just tell him my opinion and he brushes it off. But with every new day he's starting to see she's NOT getting better and she DOES have issues. Last night the two of us were watching some entertainment show and, yet, another crazy story came on about her….and I saw the realization go off in his head. She isn't just rebelling she has mental issues….she's not all there.

I am a person with bipolar disorder (manic depression), and was diagnosed many, many years ago. It is a complex and serious mental illness. The episodes you have can be extremely damaging not only to yourself, but family and friends as well.
Now, with that being said, you still wouldn't catch me in that crazy-ass wig!

Yup…I'd wager on borderline personality disorder which can also include traits/symptoms of bipolarity. Usually attacks girls in their teens/late teens. Drugs/alcohol don't help and can make manias worse, etc. Impulsivity can be a huge trait as can self-destructive behaviors (eating disorders, cutting, addictions). Usually marked by a disconnect and often an unresolved situation of childhood abuse. My bet is that poor Brit will soon become the poster child for this misunderstood, little known mental illness.

PS I agree with Doc Cherry above. (see my other previous posting) Also, sadly, she should be treated for her symptoms and a diagnosis doesn't really matter because ultimately, mental illness or not, SHE is responsible for her actions. She needs a good therapist, the right combination of meds, and a supportive family environment to achieve health and well-being. Because of her money she can feed her shopping and addictive impulses and it will utlimately either destroy her or her children if she doesn't get help.
to be bipolar would mean that you'd have to have very low lows. She has never been out of the spotlight long enough to explain any depressive "can't get out of my bed" symptoms. She has a major drug and alcohol problem which is making her look crazy.
Please hear me out on this: Keep in mind that i am not a Britney fan but just a human being watching another person "losing it" in front of the world. Between this headline and the one about Britney and her wanting her sons teeth whitened, i am really beginning to feel worried about this girl. I'm no doctor, but I've been saying this for months. Of course, it takes an actual doctor and weeks of therapy to get to the bottom of her problems before an accurate diagnosis is given. When and if that does happen, I will not be surprised if she is in fact deemed bipolar.

coming from someone in the mental health field, i think it is extremely irresponsible and unethical for these "psychologists" to make (or imply) diagnoses. i question their credentials because anyone who went through six years of postgraduate training would know that you can't diagnose someone without having adequate one-on-one contact and certainly not by falling the news (least of all, perezhilton.com and the like)! unfortunately, lay people will buy into these diagnoses as they lack the proper training to recognize the sheer absurdity. tsk tsk "doctors", tsk tsk.

That can be part of the disorder too: whether histrionic or borderline or narcissistic. My bets are on borderline with traits of bipolarity. And yup, borderlines can act like pre-adolescents because they often developmental "stop" at the age of trauma. In her case, likely the shock of fame and being oversexualized at a young age.
