We are still getting a Twitter handle on this new legal precedent!
Courtney Love has been charged with defamation after she sent out a tweet in 2010 saying that her lawyer at the time, Rhonda Holmes, had been “bought off” after she refused to engage in a lawsuit with the managers of her late-husband Kurt Cobain‘s estate.
Twitter libel cases have been filed in the past, but this is the first case to make it to trial in the U.S. ever.

Courtney claimed yesterday on the witness stand that the tweet in question was just an opinion, and that she had believed at the time that it was only sent to 2 people.
However, Rhonda’s attorney claims that “bought off” meant Rhonda had been bribed, and that the tweet qualifies as a damaging statement!
As she continues her testimony today we’ll continue to follow Friday this landmark trial.
