Drew Barrymore Confesses She's 'Cried Every Day' Over Homeschooling Daughters

Drew Barrymore talks homeschooling her daughters amid quarantine

Like many parents, Drew Barrymore is struggling to find balance while quarantining at home with her two daughters!

Speaking to Savannah Guthrie for the Today show on Tuesday, the actress and businesswoman opened up how she’s been in tears every day over having to play the role of teacher, on top of her other responsibilities!

The mom, who shares girls Olive, 7, and Frankie, 5, with ex-husband Will Kopelman, explained she thought she had a handle on it all until homeschooling started:

“I don’t know if there are good days and bad days. I think there are good hours and bad hours…”

Drew spilled:

“I just tried to find routine with my kids. Go on a bike ride, take a car ride, break out the chalk and do hopscotch, board games, do seeding things in little cups and make signs and be inventive. And then school started. And it all went out the window. The minute I thought, ‘Oh, I’m three weeks in. I’ve got this,’ I cried every day, all day long.”

To further drive home the point, the 45-year-old added she’s very much had her hands full trying to teach during the day, giving her even more perspective about how much teachers manage:

“It was like every church and state. It was the messiest plate I’ve ever held in my life to be the teacher, the parent, the disciplinarian, the caretaker. And I thought, ‘Oh my god, and teachers have children.’ Do they survive it because they get to go away and work with other kids? I didn’t think I needed to respect and appreciate teachers any more than I did. Then you start to get some systems and you see people on social media making lists and you’re like, ‘Aaarghh!’ You find your way. You’re resilient.”

Still, Barrymore counts herself blessed and shared “it’s a choice to choose happiness in every moment.”

“Happiness is a war you fight every day and the victory is if you accomplished any of those wins, that is a win. I march in the army of optimism and I am looking for recruits, but I am very real about it. I am not some vapid hippie who’s like, ‘You just gotta be happy, man.’ This is the way and the direction I will point my compass.”

The star, who is the founder of Flower Beauty, has also been keeping her plate full by teaming up with over a dozen beauty brands via Beauty United, a campaign raising money for coronavirus relief in “supporting healthcare heroes.” Drew divulged just how important it was for them to all come together:

“I’m one in a sea of people that’s supporting this. The thing that I take away from this as well is, this is a moment in time where everyone is putting their separate companies [aside] and going into alignment.”

She continued:

“I see [Jimmy] Kimmel, [Stephen] Colbert and [Jimmy] Fallon hosting a show together. I see every beauty company coming together. I see a sea of change where network lines and company lines are fading away and this common goal is bringing everyone together.”

Beauty United, which also has support from Kim Kardashian West, Kylie Jenner, Gwyneth Paltrow, and more founders, has already raised over $6 million as they continue to try and reach their $10 million goal.
