Sports Illustrated Unveils Game Of Thrones Cover, With George R.R. Martin Interview!!

game of thrones george rr martin sports illustrated cover interview
Game of Thrones is EVERYWHERE (except in new season form, on our TVs! UGH!!), including on the cover of a sports magazine (above)!
That’s right, a show about dragons and magic — which some would consider super nerdy — has become so mainstream that even sports outlets are having at it, and inviting the creator to come on podcasts and talk sports!
George R.R. Martin is a sports fan!!
Here are some of the things he talked about, including who the story’s equivalent to LeBron would be:

“Well, LeBron James is the greatest active basketball player I suppose so the parallel in Westeros would be who is the greatest active swordsman. You can make a case for Jamie Lannister. You can make a case for The Hound or his brother Ser Gregor [Clegane] or Sir Loras [Tyrell], the Knight of Flowers. These are all first class Knights. Or even Ser Barristan The Bold [Sir Barristan Selmy]. These are all guys who are top at their own particular sport, which is swordsmanship and jousting, and all of the combat skills that attend knighthood.”

Amazing! He even goes on to say that since the Starks are the heroes of his stories, that in football, the Giants would be the Starks because, well, they’re his team!
LOLz!
If you think about it, a lot of parallels can be drawn between sports and the stories, so we’re glad to see people pointing that out. And it’s super fascinating to hear that George is so into sports! It might be stereotyping to think he isn’t, but it surprised us!
