From the outside, Justin Bieber‘s romance with Hailey Baldwin might look like a whirlwind — but it’s actually been more of a steady gust!
A source says the couple’s surprise engagement isn’t actually that much of a shock to those in their inner circle, as Justin and Hailey have been close for years.

The insider dished to People:
“It’s kind of a surprise, but kind of not. Justin has been extremely happy these past few weeks. He has known Hailey for a long time. This might seem sudden, but they know each other very well.”
As you probably know, the Canadian crooner and celebuspawn go way back; they previously dated before splitting in 2016 — and, years before that, were close friends.

Hailey recently recounted the details of their relationship in an interview with U.K. newspaper The Times, revealing:
“Justin and I were friends for a long time. I met him when I was really young and he was one of my best friends. Everybody knows that at a certain point in time that turned into something else, but that just happens when you’re 18, 19. It was what it was … We didn’t speak for quite some time and there was a lot of weirdness that went on … we’ve moved past that.”
That’s an understatement.
The pair rekindled their romance this summer, largely thanks to having bonded over their faith and attending Hillsong church over the years. An insider told People last month:
“They’re very close because of Hillsong. She definitely cares about him. They also have a long history together.”
Sounds like these two have been endgame for quite some time.
