Well, that was quick!
Miley Cyrus dropped a new song on Friday amid her shocking breakup from husband Liam Hemsworth — and you better believe it’s entirely about the downfall of their relationship!
We’re not talking about cryptic, Wrecking Ball-style allusions to their now-defunct romance: the track, titled Slide Away, pretty explicitly examines how things fell apart over the course of their decade-long courtship.
The 26-year-old kicks off the track with the following lyrics:
“Once upon a time, it was paradise / once upon a time, I was paralyzed / But it’s time to let it go / once upon a time, it was made for us / woke up one day, it had turned to dust / baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / so it’s time to let it go.”
They’re not in Malibu anymore…

Interestingly enough, Miley addresses losing their Malibu home in last year’s wildfires — singing, “I want my house in the hills” — before hinting at what may have driven a wedge between the couple:
“Don’t want the whiskey and pills / I don’t give up easily / but I don’t think I’m down.”
Hmmm… sounds like she’s referencing — or confirming? — the recent reports of Liam’s partying getting in the way of their relationship.
That part’s up for speculation, but the rest of the song is spelled out quite clearly. We mean, she pretty obviously referenced them meeting on the set of The Last Song in 2010 — at which time, Miley was a very different Miley. She sings:
“Move on, we’re not 17 / I’m not who I used to be / you say that everything changed / you’re right, we’re grown now.”
The songstress drives her message home in the chorus, noting how Liam is currently home in Australia surfing with his brother Chris Hemsworth, while she is back in El Lay gearing up for her next EP.
She muses in the track:
“So won’t you slide away / Back to the ocean, I’ll go back to the city lights.”
Like we said, it’s all pretty on the nose. But it’s also a pretty solid number!

As we reported, new Miley music was teased earlier this week when the pop star shared a photo of herself wearing headphones in a recording booth — mere days after her breakup with the 29-year-old actor was announced.

It’s unclear if Slide Away was written or recorded while Miley and Liam were separated, but more likely than not, it was. It’s been reported the couple have been broken up for a few months now; meanwhile, the starlet’s made a point to tell fans to respect her post-breakup “process.” It sure sounds like this angsty breakup song is part of that process!
It appears Slide Away will be featured on her upcoming six-track EP, titled She Is Here — the second mini-album to be featured in her three-EP mega-album, She Is Miley Cyrus.
She is healing, y’all.
