Miley Cyrus may not be making public statements about her divorce from Liam Hemsworth, but… well, she kind of is.
The singer took the stage at Monday night’s MTV VMAs to perform her new single Slide Away, and you may not have noticed, but she was saying something about the split.

First, the track itself is a breakup song. It may not be as evocative and unforgettable as Wrecking Ball, but the words spell out her post-Malibu feelings pretty well:
“Once upon a time it was paradise, Once upon a time I was paralyzed”
and
“Once upon a time it was made for us, Woke up one day it had turned to dust”
She even mentions “whiskey and pills” — seemingly confirming reports Miley had reached her breaking point with Liam over substance abuse.
And that’s the song she decided to perform in front of millions at the VMAs.
Seems like a statement to us. But there was one more sentence in there you almost certainly missed.
Sharp eyed fans probably noticed Miley had a brand new tattoo on her left bicep. But unless you had a 4K TV and wore out your pause button, we’d be surprised if you could make out what it said.
It’s yet another lyric, only this time not from Miley but from the song The Thing, by late ’80s/early ’90s post-punk legends The Pixies. It reads in delicate script:
“My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free”
Considering the context, that’s a pretty strong message — letting Liam (and the rest of us) know Miley is doing just fine.
Oh, it’s a REALLY good but REALLY brief song, by the way. Though that’s probably a coincidence.
So what is making Miley’s heart feel so free?
It may not be just being literally free from Liam; she’s also in a new relationship with Kaitlynn Carter — who was right there at the award show to offer her full support.
According to eyewitnesses speaking to ET, the new couple were looking very cuddly backstage prior to Miley’s performance:
“Kaitlynn was swaying at the side of the stage as Miley rehearsed Slide Away. Afterward, the two walked backstage, hugging each other.”
Another witness clarifies this was not in a friend way either, despite what some The Hills cast members might think; the source says the two “looked very much like a couple” with Kaitlynn even grabbing Miley’s butt.

Innerestingly, the girls apparently had a pretty awkward impromptu double date going.
After the VMAs they drove from Newark to New York City to hit up the nightclub Up and Down. Who should enter the same club just 20 minutes later?
Kaitlynn’s ex Brody Jenner and his new 22-year-old rebound Josie Canseco!
Seems like a pretty big coincidence — and so awkward, right?!
But… there’s also the possibility they purposely met up there. Hear us out:
Miley and Kaitlynn have seemingly made peace with Brody by sending an olive branch — well, a plant anyway. They bought him a ton of weed.
Could it be they’re all cool with one another now? Even friends??
Well, we won’t know for sure until Miley gets some ink to celebrate it, but considering all the clubs available in the tri-state area around where the VMAs took place, we think it’s a bit too coincidental to end up in the same one at the same time.
