2,000 professional football players have joined in a lawsuit against the NFL for failing to give players adequate information about concussions and have cited the Saints’ bounty controversy as an example.
Now three New Orleans players closely associated with the controversy are suing the league because they felt Commissioner Roger Goodell‘s arbitration of the matter was “incurably and evidently biased.”
Following the bounty scandal, in which defensive coordinator Gregg Williams urged his players to intentionally injure players, Will Smith, Anthony Hargrove and Scott Fujita were suspended for their alleged involvement.
All three are maintaining their innocence and even have the NFL Players Association backing them up with a lawsuit against that claims Goodell violated the league’s labor agreement by prematurely determining they were guilty.
Calling Goodell’s investigation and arbitration process “a sham,” the lawsuit slams the NFL for not providing the players with access to “critical documents or witnesses, or anything resembling the fairness mandated by the CBA and governing industrial due process law.”
The NFL has responded to its newest legal mess by calling it an “improper attempt to litigate”. While the NFLPA wants the two previous arbitrations that ruled in the favor of the league to be set aside, the NFL argues that the commissioner has the authority to punish the players as he did.
