Women’s swimming champion Jamie Cail met an unfortunate end after being found unresponsive at her home, and police believe something more sinister could be at play regarding her death…
On Monday Jamie’s boyfriend went out for drinks at a bar, and didn’t return to their US Virgin Islands home until around midnight. When he returned, he walked into their home to find his girlfriend unresponsive and lying on the floor. He immediately knew the New Hampshire native needed help.
According to a police report released by United States Virgin Islands Police, the boyfriend and a friend — neither of whose names have been released – drove Jamie to the Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic. Police were told they performed CPR on her to no avail. They were informed of her death upon arrival around 2:39 a.m. — nearly three hours after she was allegedly discovered. The star athlete was 42 years old.
A cause of death has not been revealed by authorities, but they have said the Criminal Investigation Bureau has taken over the case and it’s “presently under investigation.” Her being deceased upon arrival to the hospital apparently raised some eyebrows about what might’ve actually happened.
Why didn’t her boyfriend and friend call 911 immediately? They packed her up and took her to the hospital themselves, but wouldn’t an EMT have been faster? Emergency first responders are trained to deal with this type of thing, right?
We’ll just have to wait for the investigation to answer these questions. You can watch more on the case (below):
Jamie was a star swimmer who competed all across the world when she was younger. In 1997, she competed at the Pan Pacific Championships and won a gold medal in a relay race. She also won a silver medal at the 1998-1999 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Brazil. Impressively, her records for the 200 yard fly, 400 yard IM, 200 meter IM, and 400 meter IM in the 15-16 age group have still yet to be broken over two decades later.
A friend spoke to New Hampshire-local outlet WMUR about the tragic loss:
“She was just she was she was a very beautiful person. She had a huge heart. She was really loving and kind and well-loved and popular on the island and everybody knows her.”
Just heartbreaking. We’re sending love and light to Jamie’s family and friends. We hope she can get the justice she deserves.
