Officer Darren Wilson was not indicted by a grand jury in the killing of Michael Brown.
While we have since heard responses from both Darren Wilson and Michael Brown’s family, President Obama just shared his own thoughts on the decision.
In fact, not only did President Obama issue a statement, he also has instructed the Attorney General Eric Holder to improve relationships between communities and law enforcement.
Here’s what our commander-in-chief had to say about the decision:
“First and foremost, we are a nation built on the rule of law. And so, we need to accept that this decision was the Grand Jury’s to make. There are Americans who agree with it, and there are americans that are very disappointed, even angry. I join Michael’s parents in asking anyone protesting this decision to do so peacefully… We should be honoring [the Brown’s] wishes. Our police officers put their lives on the line every single day… They have a tough job to do… As they do their job in the upcoming days, they need to work with the community, not against the community… Finally, we need to recognize the situation in Ferguson speak to broader challenges we face in the nation… There are good people on all sides of this debate, as well as both Republican and Democratic party… who are interested in tackling criminal justice reform… We have made tremendous progress in race relations over the last couple of decades .. but what is also true is that there are still problems, and communities of color aren’t just making these problems up.”
