Demi Lovato is back — with a powerful message!
The singer, 27, dropped her new single and accompanying music video for I Love Me on Friday, and it’s catchy AF. Not to mention, very real and a snapshot into her journey to sobriety.

With lyrics like, “I’m a black belt when I’m beating up on myself, but an expert at giving love to somebody else” — you can’t help but relate, and also get an understanding that Demi truly is her own worst enemy.

Now, real stans can spot all the references to her past, yeah?? First, Dem got to put all of her jiu jitsu fight training to good use, dueling with herself! Then, we see her as a child with her mom and sister in full ’90s garb, a total nod to her beginning in the industry!

Soon after, you’d be a fool not to notice the Jonas Brothers shout out, with three guys walking past in sequin blazers! We also observe her hand on a body soon after as it’s being whisked away in an ambulance — a reference to her overdose in July of 2018. Many fans also believe the bride and groom that appear immediately after are a callout to Wilmer Valderrama, who was by Demi’s side following her OD, but recently got engaged to model Amanda Pacheco.
Along with the visual and single drop, Lovato stopped by New Music Daily on Apple Music to talk all about her song:
“This track is all about loving yourself. You know? It’s, it’s obviously it’s called I Love Me. So it’s (laughs) not hard to figure that one out, but- um, but it is. It’s an anthem, and it, it discusses, you know, in the, in the beginning of the song, it talks about, and the second verse as well, but it talks about how hard we are on ourselves and this, the negative self-talk. You know, how easily we can listen to that. But when is loving yourself gonna be enough?”
She also shared deets on her new album and reevaluating things following her massively successful Grammys and Super Bowl performances:
“We haven’t gotten into the track listings, um, yet. And I’m still, I’m actually finishing up some of the album at, it was gonna be done a lot earlier than I thought. And then, um, after my performances, you know, we kinda went back to the drawing board and thought, “What is this album missing? What, uh, are we, am I really putting out the best work that I possibly can?” And, um, so I’m just taking a little bit more time with it. But yeah, I, I don’t know if that’ll be on the album yet.”
When asked if the album redirect was to articulate the self love theme, Lovato said:
“Absolutely. I feel like that’s obviously the goal for the (laughs) rest of my life, you know? It’s not something that I wanna just stop with this album. It’s so important to always remember that. And I think because it, like I said, in, in my song, I say, um, “Mine’s the only heart I’m gonna have for life.” We really are all we have. At the end of the day when we enter this world and when we leave this world, our souls are all we have. It’s important to respect them, treat our bodies like temples, and love ourselves as much as possible.”
Lastly, the former Disney star weighed in on her new relationship with social media:
“My relationship to social media is very simple right now. I don’t let people tag me and stuff. Um, I turned that set off on the settings. I don’t even think I have like, I let the comments on. I mean, I might. I, I don’t even really check to be honest. I wouldn’t even know. But it’s just so not important to me. What’s important is that when I get to communicate with my fans, so sometimes I have, I follow some fan accounts or just have some fans that I message back and forth. Like staying in communication with them through that way or utilizing social media to have a platform and get my message across that way is important as well. But when it comes to things like letting it ruin my, (laughs) you know, mood- … because someone said something negative, I don’t let it do that anymore. And I’ve gone to great lengths to actually protect myself from that, which I think unfortunately is something that people have to do nowadays.”
