This is pretty cool!
Over the weekend, Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally opened and — of course — shattered box office records.
The sci-fi adventure brought back popular original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill while introducing new characters played by Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac!

But because the film was directed by J.J. Abrams, there was a lot of secrecy around the project — which meant a lot of surprises and cameos!
Sure, we already knew about Simon Pegg‘s character and Daniel Craig‘s recently confirmed role as a stormtrooper, but we had no idea Ewan McGregor was going to be a part of the film!
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
About halfway through the film, Rey (Ridley) has a vision sequence after touching Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. Throughout the vision, several voices can be heard speaking — including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda!
What makes this scene so special is the voice-overs were mostly recorded for the movie which meant McGregor — who played Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels — came in to do a quick clip for the film!
Abrams revealed in an interview how it all went down saying:

“The idea of the voices was, we wanted the audience to feel ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ but not necessarily be presented right in your face ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ this idea that familiar, Force-strong voices were connecting with her. At least as well as they could.”

The director went on to say:

“You do hear a little bit of Yoda. You hear Luke yelling out, ├óΓé¼╦£Nooo!’ from that moment in Empire. And you hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ├óΓé¼╦£Rey ├óΓé¼┬ª these are your first steps,’ Here’s the cool part. We asked Ewan McGregor to come in and do the line. And he was awesome and we were very grateful. He was incredibly sweet and handsome, and all that stuff. Then he rode off on his motorcycle. Literally the coolest voice over actor ever.”

What’s even MORE AH-Mazing is the fact that they were also able to use a snippet of Sir Alec Guinness‘ voice — who played Obi-Wan in the original trilogy.
Producer Bryan Burk presented J.J. with a clip of Obi-Wan saying “Rey” — and the director didn’t realize what he had:

“I said, ├óΓé¼╦£That’s cool, is that the thing from Ewan McGregor?’ He said ├óΓé¼╦£No, we took a line from Alec Guinness saying ├óΓé¼╦£Afraid.'”

J.J. explained:

“They cut it, and you hear the performance ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ he’s saying it the way I would have begged Alec Guinness to have said it. It is so crazy perfect. So when you hear Obi-Wan talk to Rey it is both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor doing the voice.”

Sure there were some pretty cool cameos in the flick, but having both McGregor AND Guinness’ voices MAY be our favorite!
