[Warning: Potentially Triggering Content]

Disheartening details surrounding pro golfer Grayson Murray’s death have been revealed.

The two-time PGA Tour winner sadly passed away on Saturday morning, just one day after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. The news shocked both his fans and family, with his parents Eric and Terry revealing in a statement shared by the PGA Tour on Sunday that he died by suicide:

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare. We have so many questions that have no answers … Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

So, so sad. And now, his manner of death has been confirmed — and the disturbing cause as well.

DailyMail.com reported on Tuesday that the 30-year-old athlete died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Per the outlet, he is believed to have turned on his Land Rover and left it running the garage of his three-story Florida townhouse. He then is believed to have gone upstairs as the deadly fumes from his vehicle billowed into his home, eventually resulting in his death.

How tragic.

A neighbor told the outlet they went outside to investigate at around 12:30 a.m. local time after hearing persistent engine revving:

“My thought was maybe it was a kid revving a car. I went outside to investigate but by then there was no sound.”

Ultimately what alerted people to call 911 was the sound of his carbon monoxide alarm going off:

“What I later heard is that he started the car in the garage and went upstairs. He went to sleep and never woke up. People only found out because the CO alarm kept going off.”

Police were notified at 10:49 a.m. local time, and that’s when Grayson’s body was found.

A rep for the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department announced an investigation has been launched but that foul play is not suspected:

“We are conducting an investigation into the matter that occurred in our city. The decedent was discovered on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at approximately 11:00 am. The initial inquiry does not reveal signs of foul play. There is no apparent risk to the public and no further information will be released as the investigation is being conducted.”

Grayson shared the Palm Beach Gardens home with his 28-year-old fiancée Christina Ritchie. He has also been open in the past about struggling with alcoholism and with his mental health.

What a loss. Our hearts are with all of his loved ones. Rest in peace.
