Joss Whedon Demands Robert Downey Jr. Return For Avengers 2

Joss Whedon did an amazing job with The Avengers, helping it become the third highest grossing film of all time.
But the director says the sequel just isn’t worth making without Robert Downey Jr.! He says:

“He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making Avengers 2 without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that.”

But RDJ hasn’t signed on yet! And considering how much he got paid for Iron Man 3, there’s a fair chance Marvel won’t be able to afford him much longer!
So will Joss cave and make the sequel without him should it come to that? The director says:

“I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine. But I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected.”

We’re glad Joss is hopeful, the unexpected might just be an anemic Avengers sequel!
