Amber Portwood Reveals She Started Partying & Taking Pills At 11
Amber Portwood is opening up about the past drug use that changed her life forever.
The Teen Mom OG star recently spoke with the Dopey Podcast about the truth behind her struggles with sobriety.
The 28-year-old reveals that her introduction to pills came very early on in her life with very little information:
“I’ve been partying since I was about 11 years old, that’s the first time I did pills. In Anderson, [Indiana], there’s not much to do. A lot of kids at school, they always brought s— from their house. We didn’t know what much of it was”
Portwood said things continued through age 15, when she started to ‘dabble in partying, hanging out with bad people.’
It was ultimately a snowball effect that brought the reality TV starlet to her lowest point:
“That’s when the pills started coming in, a lot of opiates. In my mind, I think I was just trying to self-medicate at the time, probably very depressed, so it just kind of spiraled out of control. It wasn’t [until] I got pregnant with my daughter Leah that I stopped doing drugs all together ’cause I was so scared of something happening to her. A lot of people don’t even believe me when I tell them that, but it’s the truth”
But even the aftermath of childbirth with Leah, now 9, slowly pulled Amber back into her bad habit:
“Six to seven months after Leah was born, I started taking opiates again, medication for my back for my scoliosis and I got addicted from there”
Thankfully, after a brief stint in jail and a major life turnaround, the momma of two is in a much better place. Since meeting boyfriend Andrew Glennon, the two have welcomed their son James together and seem happier than ever!
Maybe Amber’s transparency will help someone else change their lives, too.
